──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
TABLE OF CONTENTS
─────────────────
1. THE SETUP PROGRAM
2. GENERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING
3. SOUND CARD TROUBLE SHOOTING
4. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
1. THE SETUP PROGRAM
────────────────────
SETUP.EXE must be run before you can start playing CYRIL CYBERPUNK.
The menu options and their uses are described below:
1.1 AUDIO CARD
────────────────
You must select your sound card from the list, and choose the
appropriate sound card settings ( BASE I/O PORT, IRQ, DMA ).
SOUND QUALITY: The higher the sound quality, the more work the
computer must do. So if CYRIL CYBERPUNK is running
slowly on your machine, select low sound quality.
SOUND CHANNELS: This is the number of sound effect that can play
simultaneously. One again the higher this value,
the more work your computer has to perform.
TEST SOUND & MUSIC: This just enables you test if your sound card
is configured correctly.
1.2 SOUND & MUSIC
───────────────────
Use this menu if you wish to disable sound effects and/or music.
1.3 DETAIL LEVEL
──────────────────
If CYRIL CYBERPUNK is running slowly or the scrolling seems jerky
at times, you can try dropping the detail level.
HIGH DETAIL : Everything on
MEDIUM DETAIL : Status bar animations off
LOW DETAIL : MEDIUM + foregrounds off, certain animations off,
smoke trails on CYRIL's board off.
1.4 INPUT DEVICE
──────────────────
This is where you select how you wish to control CYRIL. Remember
if you choose JOYSTICK or GRAVIS GAMEPAD you must calibrate it
first using the CALIBRATE JOYSTICK option in the SETTINGS menu
in the game.
1.5 WINDOWS 95 SETUP
──────────────────────
This menu option sets up the directories in the CC.PIF file.
Cyril is a DOS based game, therefore we strongly recommend you
run it from DOS ( If you are running Windows 95 then DOS MODE ),
BUT it does run under Windows 95. We have therefore included an
ICON and PIF.
To run CYRIL CYBERPUNK from WINDOWS 95, enter the file explorer
and navigate to your CYRIL CYBERPUNK drive and directory.
Double click on CC.PIF.
You can create a shortcut to CYRIL CYBERPUNK by dragging CC.PIF
onto your desktop.
If you run CYRIL CYBERPUNK from a DOS window or you wish to
create your own PIF, make sure you run it with -WIN95 command
line parameter:
e.g.: CC -WIN95
When CYRIL CYBERPUNK starts we automatically turn numlock OFF.
Sometimes WINDOWS 95 may turn it back on, this will be easily
noticed as the cursor keys will not work in the menus and
CYRIL is in permanent FAST MODE in the game. Just press NUMLOCK
once to remedy this.
NOTE: On slower computers running under WINDOWS 95 may cause the
music to sound staggered during level loading and some
comic cut-scenes.
1.6 COMPATIBILITY
──────────────────
LOW MEMORY (4 Mb) MODE:
If your computer has 4Mb of memory you must set this to ON.
Because of the large amount of sprites and scenery in CYRIL
CYBERPUNK, the memory usage of the game is very high,
therefore you may have to perform a clean boot or create a
boot disk to free up enough memory. See the BOOT DISK section
of GENERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING.
ATI MACH COMPATIBILITY:
Certain VGA cards such as the ATI MACH32 and MACH64 do not
support PEL-PANNING ( A technique we use to make the scrolling
smooth ). If you have such a card ( or if the horizontal
scrolling shudders badly ) then switch this option ON.
Unfortunately the scrolling with this option ON is not as
smooth as it would be with a PEL-PANNING compatible video card.
1.7 SAVE AND EXIT
───────────────────
Once you have correctly setup and configured CYRIL CYBERPUNK
choose this option to save the settings.
Then type CC and have fun!
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
2. GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING
──────────────────────────
2.1 MEMORY MANAGERS
───────────────────
CYRIL CYBERPUNK can be unstable in the presence of a memory
manager, such as EMM386 or QEMM. We recommend removing these from
memory before playing. Alternatively, if you are having trouble,
try disabling EMS support, and remove any memory inclusions /
exclusions.
e.g. DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
2.2 CREATING A BOOT DISK
────────────────────────
1. Insert a new disk into your A drive ( floppy or stiffy - drive
dependant )
2. At the DOS prompt type: FORMAT A: /S and press ENTER
This will format the disk and place the system files onto
it.
3. At the DOS prompt type: A: and press ENTER
4. Type copy con autoexec.bat
You will now be entering the contents of your autoexec.bat.
To cancel at any time press CTRL-BREAK.
To save the file in its current state and exit press CTRL-Z.
Type in your SOUND driver environment variable and any
initialization commands it needs:
Example for SOUND BLASTER 16 with PORT 220, IRQ 7, DMA 1,5
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 P330 T6
C:\SB16\SB16SET /M:240 /VOC:240 /TREBLE:220 /OPGAIN:8,8
C:\SB16\SBCONFIG.EXE /S
Example for GUS MAX with PORT 220, IRQ 7, DMA 1
SET ULTRASND=220,1,1,7,7
C:\ULTRASND\ULTRINIT.EXE -ej
Once you have completed this press CTRL-Z
5. Type copy con config.sys
Enter the following:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
FILES=20
BUFFERS=20,0
DOS=HIGH,UMB
Press CTRL-Z
6. You should now reboot your computer.
7. Goto the CYRIL CYBERPUNK directory on your hard drive
Example: Type C: and press ENTER
Type CD \CC and press ENTER
Type CC and press ENTER
NOTE: If you have an DOS text editor, use this to create
your bootup files. ( It's much easier than COPY CON )
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
3. SOUND CARD TROUBLE SHOOTING
──────────────────────────────
3.1 SOUND CARD SUPPORT
──────────────────────
CYRIL CYBERPUNK supports most popular sound cards on the
market, including:
■ Sound Blaster 1.x
■ Sound Blaster 2.x
■ Sound Blaster Pro
■ Sound Blaster 16/16ASP
■ Sound Blaster AWE32 and WaveBlaster
■ Pro Audio Spectrum
■ Pro Audio Spectrum+
■ Pro Audio Spectrum 16
■ Logitech SoundMan
■ Windows Sound System
■ Gravis UltraSound
■ Gravis UltraSound Max
3.2 SOUND RELATED PROBLEMS AND THEIR SOLUTIONS
──────────────────────────────────────────────
■ THE COMPUTER LOCKS UP OR REBOOTS
────────────────────────────────
Run SETUP and verify that your sound card settings are correct:
- Check your I/O port address, IRQ line and DMA channel settings.
If you don't know your sound's settings, consult your
manual for details.
- Make sure your sound card has no conflicts with other cards in
your system. If your sound card works properly with other
programs, you can assume that there are no such conflicts.
If this doesn't solve the problem, try booting clean --- usually
memory managers like QEMM, EMM386, etc. and/or TSRs loaded in
memory may cause problems.
■ THE SOUND AND MUSIC RUNS SLOWLY ON MY COMPUTER
──────────────────────────────────────────────
Your computer is not fast enough. You can speed up the system by
running SETUP and setting a lower quality.
■ THE SYSTEM DOES NOT RECOGNIZE MY SOUND CARD
───────────────────────────────────────────
You have selected the wrong sound card or I/O port address. Run
SETUP again and select the right settings.
If you are using a Sound Blaster 16 then you must check that the
right drivers are loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
files.
If the problems persist, check that you have enough conventional
memory ( maybe the system was unable to allocate conventional
memory required for a DMA buffer used to communicate with your
sound card ).
■ I DON'T HEAR ANY SOUND
──────────────────────
First check that your speakers/headphones are plugged in. If they
are make sure the VOLUME CONTROL on your sound card is up.
If that is not the problem then check that your IRQ and/or DMA
settings are correct. You must run the SETUP program to select
the right settings, it is highly recommended to reboot your
computer before trying the new settings.
■ MUSIC IS FINE WHEN I START, BUT GETS CUT OFF AFTER A FEW SECONDS
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This is what happens when you select a wrong IRQ line for your
sound card. Run SETUP again and select the correct IRQ number.
■ MY SOUND BLASTER CLONE IS NOT RECOGNIZED
────────────────────────────────────────
Run the SETUP program and set the right hardware parameters.
Choose the plain Sound Blaster. If this does not fix the problem,
your Sound Blaster clone may not be 100 % compatible.
■ THE MUSIC SOUNDS SLOW ON MY SOUND BLASTER
─────────────────────────────────────────
Run SETUP again and select plain Sound Blaster. You were possibly
using the Sound Blaster 2.0 / Pro driver and your card does not
support high speed DMA transfers.
■ THE SYSTEM HANGS WITH MY SOUND BLASTER 16
─────────────────────────────────────────
Your system's motherboard cannot handle high DMA at full speed.
On some machines, the DMA controller does not function properly
during high DMA transfer. To solve this problem, use a 8-bit DMA
channel for high DMA transfers. See your SB16 manual for details.
■ I HEAR STATIC WITH MY SOUND BLASTER
───────────────────────────────────
Try turning the MIC and LINE volumes to zero.
If you still hear static try disconnecting your parallel port
devices.
■ I ONLY HEAR SOUND EFFECTS, NO MUSIC
───────────────────────────────────
If you are running in LOW MEMORY MODE music is automatically
disabled to save memory.
If your aren't running in LOW MEMORY MODE check that MUSIC is
ON in the SETUP program, then check your music volume in the
SETTINGS menu in the game.
If you have a GUS card the IRQ setting is probably incorrect
Run SETUP again and set the correct settings.
■ SOUND BLASTER 16 SPECIFIC NOTES
───────────────────────────────
You must select the high DMA channel in the SETUP program, this
is because the system uses 16-bit playback mode. See your SB16
manual for details.
Make sure that the right SB16 drivers are loaded in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. If you don't want to waste
memory loading these drivers, you may want to try the following:
Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and insert the following lines:
REM
REM These lines will setup your SB16 sound card at port 220h
REM using IRQ 5, low DMA 1, high DMA 5 and MIDI port 330h.
REM
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
DIAGNOSE /S
The above lines will set your SB16 hardware configuration based
on the BLASTER environment variable. Make sure that the above
lines are setting the BLASTER variable with the right parameters.
See your manual for details about the BLASTER environment
variable.
■ PRO AUDIO SPECTRUM SPECIFIC NOTES
────────────────────────────────
Make sure that the right PAS drivers are properly loaded in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. Without these drivers the
system won't recognize your PAS sound card. If you have a PAS+ or
PAS16 and the system does not work properly, you may want to try
running SETUP and tell it that you have a Sound Blaster sound
card.
■ GRAVIS ULTRASOUND SPECIFIC NOTES
────────────────────────────────
You must choose the GF1 IRQ line and Playback DMA channel in the
SETUP program. Make sure that the right GUS drivers are loaded in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. However, the sound system
should work without loading any of these drivers.
Notice that some SB emulators (SBOS) may conflict with the sound
system, so if you experience problems try disabling these
emulators.
Because of the nature of the GUS, the sound effects are uploaded
to the card using a caching system. This may cause slight slow
downs from time to time during gameplay.
